John Spero

Daemen University
Professor
Buffalo NY
I retired from industry in 2022 and moved into an adjunct professor role at Daemen University in Amherst NY.  I used creative problem solving and various innovation methods to develop products from catalytic convertors to oxygen supply systems to software for medical records over my 30+ year career.  I have been truly blessed to have mentors including Bill Shephard and Scott Isaksen in my CPS journey.

I teach three courses at Daemen including creative problem solving and innovation using design thinking in the Leadership and Innovation graduate program, and an undergraduate leadership course in the School of Art and Entrepreneurship. Each course starts with a common framework then by CPS tools, they are modified to the interests and needs of the students. Each course is the same but also very different.

In my spare time, I play in two Americana music groups in the Buffalo area. I have played guitar and mandolin for over 40 years and recently learned to play piano (not many requests for a bluegrass piano player) and I am developing tools to assist songwriters and musicians with enhancing their creativity in creating and playing music. I am also writing books on how to teach digitalization to college students and how to help friends do risk assessments on projects that seem to be a good idea to them, but you know better...

My 2023 Thursday workshop will involve using popular songs when teaching CPS to help students understand CPS. This will lead us to our final activity of writing a song as a workshop group about CPS and the CPSI conference.
